Coitus interruptus

A method of contraception, also called withdrawal, in which the man withdraws his penis from the vagina before ejaculation. Fertilization is prevented because the sperm do not enter the vagina.Coitus interruptus is oldest and a very inefficient method of contraception.

So, as a method of contraception, it’s certainly better than nothing! However, doctors do not recommend it because:

  • it's easy to fail to withdraw early enough
  • there may be sperms present in the 'dew drop' of fluid that a man produces when he is excited, but well before he actually ejaculates
  • in the case of repeated intercourse some sperm may get into the vagina( sperm that left on the walls of the urethra after the first ejaculation )

Advantages of the method.

  • Do not require any cost;
  • Does not require any medical intervention;
  • No use of any drugs or devices;
  • Do not cause side effects;
  • Always available;
  • Involve both partners in the process of family planning.

Possible problems

  • Some pairs report  reduced sexual satisfaction;
  • The method is ineffective if used improperly;
  • Does not provide protection against sexually transmitted infections.

Annual  failure rate 20-25
